Brittney is a wild flower that bloomed with a little extra push from Grow Wild! We first met her this past spring, at Grow Wild 2.0, and fell in love with her warm demeanor and passion for creating her own modern-day private practice. Brittney is unique in her ability to really hone in on her goals and put her plans into action.
In just a few short months, she has opened her own practice, is booked full with clients, and is actively focused on growing her business and continuing to explore her dreams! And this is on top of being a mom to two young children.
Brittney is a beautiful example of the power of taking the leap- have a dream, plan a little (but don’t overthink it)- and then JUMP! Amazing things will happen.
The Growth -
I began my career journey in finance after obtaining an undergraduate degree in Business Management. On a trip to Costa Rica I had the opportunity to volunteer at a group home with mothers who were in recovery and my whole life changed. At that moment I knew that my calling was to help others, specifically mothers and the adoption/foster community. I came home, quit my job, applied to ONE graduate program, crossed my fingers and the rest is history! When I got into the program I worked as a full-time nanny and caretaker to pay the bills. I received all of my experience during graduate school by doing work for free. Once, I graduated, I took a job working in child welfare where I was making pennies on the dollar, but was offered exceptional training. Eventually, I took the role of motherhood and went into private practice with the family I nannied for in undergraduate school. A few years later, life took me from Jacksonville, FL to Boise, ID where I took on the challenge of SAHM! I began dreaming of my own private practice during this time that included ideas of connecting mothers in the community. Here I am! I have officially opened up my own PRIVATE PRACTICE! So, what set out as an idea has turned into a DREAM!
The Weeds -
The most challenging part of my job currently is believing in myself! It is easy to play the comparison game (NO ONE WINS AT THE COMPARISON GAME) and watch others do what you are trying to do. Boise is saturated with therapist and it can feel like we are all doing the same thing sometimes. However, that is such a lie. Working for yourself requires a lot of mindfulness, confidence and encouragement.
The Seed (aka the WHY) -
HELPING PEOPLE! It is why I do what I do!
A Day in the Life -
Since I am getting started, it probably looks very different from what it will look like in a year from now. I am trying to figure everything out and it can be very time consuming. I started by making monthly and weekly plans/goals. Those plans/goals included: getting licensed, starting a busing plan, getting registered with the state, opening a bank account for my business, creating a brand and website, learning how to record/edit a podcast, advertising, marketing, working on social media content, photoshoots, networking, finding office space, designing an office, and the list goes on. My hope for the next transition is to see 15 clients a week Monday - Thursday (including one group), work on marketing/social media and podcasts on Friday and work as a crisis counselor a few hours on Saturday.
The Bloom -
There were two turning points in my work in which I really felt personal progress. The first was Grow Wild. In a way, I thought I would attend this workshop and get a pat on the back and left with a "good luck". It was anything but. I was met with women who were just like me at the start of their dream who were killing it and LOVED my ideas of a Modern Day Private Practice. I received tips and encouragement from REAL hustlers who had been in my shoes. They really empowered me to move forward with my dream and STILL do. The second point was when I announced online I would be opening a private practice and within one day had booked my first client (I didn't even have an office space yet!). I knew that this wasn't luck, this was my calling!
What it Takes -
Confidence and taking the first step!
What I Wish I Knew -
Ironically, the business/legal side of things. I wish this would have been a course offered in my graduate program (becoming licensed, how to deal with insurance, state requirements, accounting, ect.). I watched countless YouTube videos on how to do things I didn't know how to do and asked for help from everyone and anyone. I was shocked how open people in my field were to help me! My biggest piece of advice is to put yourself out there and ask for help! It isn't always easy, but it can result in an amazing outcome.
Wild Flower Advice -
Introduce yourself to everyone (easier for extroverts than introverts). I find opportunities everywhere to market myself in reality. Putting yourself out there is extremely vulnerable, but it is so worth it!
